During the two days that preceded Saturday he had run the message endless times through his mind, going over the various scenarios that he felt could have precipitated the necessity for such an urgent meeting. And although he came to no firm conclusion with regards to the subject, he did decide that whatever the reason was, it must be very serious or else why go to such an extreme as using that method of communication rather than the usual Times classified code words. He had not slept well during the Friday night and awoke from what little sleep he had irritable and gritty had eyed. Washed and shaved and wearing a towelling dressing gown he stepped into the small kitchen. He would never admit it to anybody but it always made him feel better if he handled his Luger P08. They were old friends and she was one of the only things in this wicked world that he truly trusted. His shoulder holster was hanging on the back of the door, he lifted it off the hook, eased her out of the holster and placed the polished leather on the kitchen table. After checking that the safety leaver was on, he hefted her weight in his right hand, feeling the knurled wooden grip against his palm he flexed his fingers and then lifted her close to his nose and luxuriated in the smell of cold steel and gun oil. He smiled to himself and after dropping the magazine out and into his left hand, he sat down, thumbed out the nine 9 x 19mm parabellum cartridges and stood them in a line on the table. He looked at them for a few seconds and then using a finger, adjusted several very slightly, making sure that they were all exactly evenly spaced. He did this for no other reason than the placing and the exactness of the spacing made him feel good. Once he was satisfied with their positioning he picked up each bullet and held it close to his spectacles, inspecting each brass case and lead bullet, he wiped each one with a soft cloth and then, after testing the spring, reloaded the magazine and laid it down, carefully. Content with that part of the ritual, he then picked up the weapon, opened the breach and checked to make sure that it was empty. Removing the forward side plate, he laid it on the table, pushed out the rear connecting pin, broke the assembly down into its constituent parts and then also laid them out in their required positions. Taking a small screwdriver from the cutlery draw he used it to turn the firing mechanism nut head half a turn to the left so that the compressed spring could push the assembly partially clear. Withdrawing the closing piece and the spring he then slid out the firing pin and laid these last three pieces in their prescribed positions. He altered their places slightly to make sure that each part was
